Mil-SpeC liquid paint Overview

Metal Chem has developed specialized processes qualified and approved by NADCAP along with incumbent Prime Contractors to provide surface finish and complete coating systems utilized for Military and defense applications. These coating systems are subject to Salt Spray Validation IAW ASTM B117 (1008 hours) and Cyclic Corrosion Testing IAW GMW 14872 (30 Cycles) at the Primer and Topcoat levels.  These  coatings include but are not limited to Corrosion Inhibiting coating and CARC epoxy primers, wash primers and Topcoats including coating systems approved by the Department of Defense.

Chemical Resistance: Because the vehicles painted with CARC are so impervious to chemical agents, there is less risk to personnel. CARC paints are non-absorbent, thus preventing the transfer of harmful agents to those who come in contact with these surfaces. The paint even protects against radioactivity.

Ease of Decontamination: Decontamination is highly expensive and time-consuming, but necessary to reduce exposure to harmful agents. However, because these paints are so resistant to these deadly agents, it is much easier to neutralize these surfaces. Furthermore, Chemical Agent Resistant Coatings are more durable and hold up better against decontaminating solutions.

Superior Camouflage: CARC paint also includes a unique pigment package that confuses infrared technology. Previous coatings were more visible to infrared cameras. But CARC paint blends the vehicle in with its surrounding environment, thus enhancing its ability to go undetected even to infrared.

CARC stands for Chemical Agent Resistant Coatings. These coatings are used extensively on most military vehicles and equipment. They are high performance coatings that were developed to withstand decontamination during a chemical warfare attack. These coatings produce a non-porous coat that impedes radioactivity, chemical and biological contaminants from penetrating the coating and the base material. Instead of penetrating the coating, chemicals bead up on the exterior of the surface and are washed off easily. In turn, these vehicles can be used over again without the concern of future contaminants along with the security of resisting further chemical attack.

You ask, we answer

Find answers to the most frequently asked questions about the mil-spec liquid painting process.

The United States Military has high standards when it comes to equipment performance. Every detail matters to ensure safety, durability, and quality all the way down to equipment and vehicle coating. Only specially-designed products can claim to meet Military Specifications (Mil-Spec). A Chemical Agent Resistant Coating must meet military specifications in order to be produced as a CARC.

  • Chemical Resistance – CARC makes vehicles and equipment impervious to chemical agents because it is non-absorbent. Any chemical, biological, or radioactive agents remain on the surface and cannot penetrate into the equipment. This prevents the risk of transferring harmful agents to personnel once the surface has been decontaminated.
  • Easier Decontamination –  Decontamination is the time-consuming and expensive process of removing harmful agents from the surface of equipment and vehicles. CARC paint makes this process easier by being extremely resistant to hazardous agents. CARC’s durability also means it can handle the stress of decontamination agents and solvents time after time.
  • Infrared Camouflage – CARC paint is made with a special pigment package that enhances the vehicle and its equipment’s ability to go undetected by infrared cameras.

Yes. Metal Chem Inc. has developed an approved process in full compliance with the NADCAP aerospace quality system per MIL-DTL-53072 standards.
